PCA’s Health Academy, formed during the 2014-15 school year, offers high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to get hands-on experience in the healthcare industry while in high school.

The program’s mission is to create an informative and accessible option for students who have an interest in pursuing a career in the healthcare industry after graduating high school. The program offers select students a practical-based curriculum providing critical content needed for selection of a healthcare profession. Students who participate in the PCA Health Academy are exposed to a variety of information in addition to clinical opportunities.

  • History of the healthcare industry
  • Introduction to professions within the industry
  • Medical content and key terms necessary for success
  • Health-related safety procedures in the workplace
  • Cultural awareness
  • Preventative care
  • Legal and ethical requirements and responsibilities

A Prattville Baptist Hospital partnership allows PCA students the opportunity to be placed in a mini-internship in their field of interest. Students are assigned to shadow a healthcare professional to experience real life scenarios associated with day-to-day skilled responsibilities of the profession. The practical experience portion of the academy is exploratory in nature and designed to help validate the student’s interest in pursuing a healthcare career.

In addition to the PCA Health Academy’s primary purpose of creating opportunities for students, it also exists to support the community.  The healthcare industry is always in need of qualified and competent individuals who have a strong desire to serve in the profession. Students benefit from establishing relationships with professionals in their field of interest that may lead to future employment opportunities. The partnership with Prattville Baptist Hospital allows PCA to fulfill its mission of students realizing their God-given potential.

To apply, students must have an interest in a healthcare-related field, maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher, not have any attendance issues, and have taken or concurrently enrolled in Anatomy & Physiology.
