Prattville Christian Academy is proud to offer the only Engineering Academy in a private school setting in the state certified by Project Lead The Way (PLTW).

PCA’s Engineering Academy began in 2013 with Introduction to Engineering Design and has grown to include Principles of Engineering as well as Civil Engineering and Architecture. These courses allow students to be exposed to the industry while they learn valuable skills that will assist them in furthering their engineering interests and be prepared for other endeavors in life.

Introduction to Engineering Design
This course allows students the opportunity to use 3D solid modeling design software to help them design solutions to solve proposed problems. Students will learn how to document their work and communicate solutions to peers and members of the professional community.

The major focus of the course is to expose students to the design process, research and analysis, teamwork, communication methods, global and human impacts, engineering standards and technical documentation.

Principles of Engineering
This course exposes students to some of the major concepts they will encounter in a postsecondary engineering course. Students can investigate engineering and high-tech careers and develop skills and understanding of course concepts. Students employ engineering and scientific concepts in the solution of engineering design problems.

Students develop problem-solving skills and apply their knowledge of research and design to create solutions to various challenges. Students also learn how to document their work and communicate their solutions to peers and members of the professional community.

Civil Engineering and Architecture
The major focus of this course is completing long-term projects that involve the development of property sites. The course provides teachers and students the freedom to develop the property as a simulation or to students to model the experiences that civil engineers and architects face. Students work in teams, exploring hands-on activities and projects to learn the characteristics of civil engineering and architecture. Students learn about documenting their projects, solving problems, and communicating their solutions to their peers and members of the professional community of civil engineering and architecture.

Capstone Course
In the final course, students work as part of a team to develop a solution to a technical problem of their choosing. Students challenge themselves by seeking solutions to an issue within their home, school and/or community. Once the team agrees on the issue they are attempting to solve, they spend the duration of the course researching, designing, testing, and constructing solutions to be presented to industry or community partners. Throughout the course, students use the knowledge gained through the process of design and product development.
